I binge-watched the vampire diaries last week,

and it's one of my favourites. 

I'm actually re-watching the series now haha 

 

 

 

진아쌤이 최근에 본 미드 시리즈 'The Vampire Diaries'

정말 마음에 꽂히는 명대사들이 많았는데요.

여러분들께 오늘 Elena와 Damon이 나눈 대화 

중 일부분을 소개해드릴려고 해요. 

 

 

 

Elena Gilbert: 

 

Why don't you let people see the good in you?

해석) 왜 다른 사람들에게 너의 좋은 모습들을 보여주지 않는거야? 

 

(She asked Damon

why he never let people see his good sides )

 

 

Damon Salvatore: 

 

Because when people see good, they expect good. 

And I don't want to have to live up to anyone's expectations. 

 

사람들이 좋은 것을 보게 되면, 좋은 면만 기대하거든.

근데 나는 누군가의 기대에 부응해야하면서 살고 싶지는 않아.

Expect: to think that someone should behave in a particular way

or do a particular thing

 

live up to sth: to be as good as something 

 

 

 

조금 더 이 문장을 활용해보자면,

e.g. I don't want to live up to my parent's expectations. 

나는 부모님의 기대에 부응하며 살고싶지 않아. 

 

 

라는 문장도 만들어볼 수 있는데요.

 

to live up to someone's expections

라는 표현 자체를 

알아두시는 것도 좋겠죠:)

여기서 팁!

live up to sth은 한국말로 번역을 하자면,

'-에 부응하다'

라는 뜻을 가지고 있는데요.
